NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Freshmen Adele Sands and Evan Mackesy were Purdue's top finishers in the 5K races as the women placed third and the men fifth in the team standings at the CSCAA Open Water Championship contested Sunday morning in Biscayne Bay.
Junior Reagan Mattice (13th) joined Sands among the top 15 in a women's field of 108 competitors, finishing just two seconds behind Sands. Mattice posted her second career top-15 finish at the open water showcase after placing 15th in 2022.
Sands led the way in her return to her home state. Caitlin Hurley (20th) and Sarah Pophal (26th) gave the Purdue women four of the top 26 finishers.
Mackesy and Griffin Poulsen (21st) led the way for the men as top-25 finishers. They crossed the finish line within three seconds of each other. The men's field featured 95 swimmers.
