WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Soccer closes out its season with an opportunity to punctuate its turnaround season under a first-year coaching staff with a quality win, returning to the Great Lakes State to square off against No. 18 Michigan State on Sunday.
Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET at the DeMartin Soccer Stadium in East Lansing.
Purdue was eliminated from Big Ten Tournament contention with its Oct. 20 loss at Michigan. Therefore, Sunday represents the final game as Boilermakers for 10 seniors. Sydney Boudreau, Gracie Dunaway, Megan Hutchinson and Abigail Roy are all four-year letterwinners who've been with the program since the fall of 2021. Zoie Allen joined the program as a transfer in 2022 and is a three-year letterwinner at Purdue. Lexi Fraley, Mackenzie Jones, Lauren Meeks, Cloey Uddenberg and Claire Wyville all transferred in this year for their final collegiate seasons.
The Boilermakers' 2024 seniors have started a combined 216 games for Purdue during their careers. Boudreau, Dunaway and Roy have served as team captains this year.
Together the seniors have helped lay the groundwork for the new era of the program under first-year head coach Richard Moodie. Purdue's seven victories are more than it had in its last two seasons combined (six). The four-win improvement vs. 2023 is the program's best under normal circumstances (excluding 2021) since the Boilermakers enjoyed a six-win improvement from 2016 to 2017. Only three other Purdue teams (1999, 2000, 2007) won at least four more games than the previous season. In 2021, the Boilermakers won four games in the spring and 15 in the fall when the COVID-19 pandemic led to two regular-season schedules being contested in one year.
Jones played for Michigan State coach Jeff Hosler at Grand Valley State as a freshman during the 2020-21 school year. The Spartans hired Hosler in June 2021. Jones and GVSU went on to win an NCAA Division II national title that fall after Hosler had led the Lakers to three national championships in his previous six seasons.
But it didn't take long for Hosler to bring his winning ways to East Lansing. The Spartans are the two-time defending Big Ten champions and were the No. 1 team in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings the week of Sept. 24 this season after racing out to an 8-0-2 start. Prior to 2022, MSU had not finished atop the Big Ten standings since the inaugural 1994 women's soccer season.
While USC and UCLA will play for the Big Ten title Sunday in Los Angeles – with Iowa still also alive in the event of a draw – MSU still has just one loss on the season and was ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division I Tournament Committee rankings that were unveiled Oct. 16.
As one of the most improved teams in the Big Ten this season, Purdue has seen its RPI climb from the 210 range last season to 84 as of Oct. 24. And with MSU ranked 15th in the RPI, Sunday's road game is yet another opportunity to improve upon the 125 spots in the rankings Purdue has climbed this season. Moodie said the program's primary goals in future seasons are returning to the top-25 rankings and being in contention for at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Wyville has started the last two games in goal for Purdue, highlighted by her 10 saves in the 2-0 shutout win vs. Rutgers in the home finale. It was the Boilermakers' first victory in nine all-time meetings with the Scarlet Knights. Purdue had scored only two goals combined in the previous eight meetings vs. RU.
Wyville's 10 saves were the most by a Boilermaker since Marissa Bova made 10 vs. Notre Dame in a game that went to penalty kicks in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. It had been since 2010 – Carianne Betts at Michigan – that a Boilermaker had made at least 10 saves in a 90-minute affair. Lauren Mason (2006 vs. Wisconsin) was Purdue's last goalkeeper to record 10 saves while also posting a shutout.
