Singarella’s Hat Trick Powers Goal-Heavy Win

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A hat trick by junior forward Chiara Singarella propelled the Purdue soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Dayton on Sunday afternoon at Folk Field in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The Boilermakers (4-1-1) have won three in a row and are unbeaten in their last four games, with a 12-2 goal differential in that stretch. The Old Gold and Black remain undefeated at Folk Field in 2024, with a 3-0-1 mark. Meanwhile, the Flyers (3-2-0) allowed six goals, two more than they had given up all season entering the contest.

Purdue scored early and often on Sunday, with goals in the second, eighth and 13th minutes. Dayton tried to get back in the game with a 22nd-minute goal, but the home side answered right back with another score in the 25th minute. Tallies in the 48th and 65th minutes sealed the win.

The six goals scored in a game are tied for the sixth-most in team history, and the four goals in the first half are tied for seventh-most all-time in a half. It's just the second time either feat has been achieved – six or more goals in a game and four or more goals in a half – since 2017.

Singarella recorded the eighth hat trick in program history and the first since 2021, when the team had two. It was her first career hat trick, her second career multi-goal game and also the first three goals of her Purdue career. The first-year Boilermaker now has 13 career goals.

Senior midfielder Abigail Roy scored Purdue's first goal, her third in as many games and fourth of her career. Senior forward Gracie Dunaway netted the second goal, her second goal in two games, third in 2024 and 13th of her career. The eventual game-winning goal was her second this season and third of her career. After Singarella's hat trick, sophomore forward Lauren Omholt scored the team's last goal. It opened Omholt's 2024 account and was the third score of her collegiate career.

Assists today were credited to fifth-year midfielder Zoie Allen, junior forward Kayla Budish and sophomore defenders Lauren Adam and Zoe Cuneio. Budish's assist was her team-high-tying second of the season while the others notched their first of 2024.

With today's showing, Dunaway, Roy and Singarella all share the team lead with three goals, and Dunaway paces the squad with eight points. Seven Boilermakers have scored a goal in 2024, as Singarella and Omholt each added their names to that list.

Singarella led the team with four shots, and all three of her chances on target found the back of the net. Omholt was one of two Boilermakers with two shots in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Edwards made two saves in 72 minutes and picked up the win to improve to 4-1-0 on the season. Her Dayton counterpart stopped one shot.

Purdue registered 12 shots, seven on target, and Dayton had eight shots, three on frame. The Flyers earned five corner kicks and the Boilermakers had three.

The Boilermakers wasted no time getting on the scoresheet, as Roy scored at 1:25 to make it 1-0. The play began with a Dunaway corner kick. Just inside the six-yard box, the ball was first headed and then deflected off Roy's foot to Cuneio at the top of the six. She got an off-balance foot on the ball and sent it towards goal, where Roy, facing away from goal, flicked it in with her right back heel from less than four yards away.

Cuneio's assist was the first of her career.

Six-and-a-half minutes later, at 7:50, Dunaway converted after she and senior forward Lexi Fraley pressed to force a turnover inside the penalty area. With Dunaway applying pressure on the right, a Dayton defender passed the ball back to her keeper inside the penalty area. Unable to pick the ball up, she couldn't get it away before Fraley's pressure created a little space for Dunaway. Coming from the right, Dunaway got to the ball near the penalty spot, dribbled to the left and fired a left-footed shot from 12 yards away into the upper-center portion of the goal.

Purdue made it 3-0 at 12:21 when Singarella scored her first of the day on a free kick. Just outside the 18-yard box and to the left of the penalty arc, Singarella took the free kick and sent a left-footed strike into the upper-right corner of the goal.

Dayton had its first two chances just after that goal, with a shot wide left in the 13th minute and another that was saved by Edwards in the 15th minute. Then, at 21:25, the visitors found their only goal. Boel Blain scored from Jenna Hallbeck to make it 3-1.

The Boilermakers quickly answered back though, thanks to Singarella's second of the day at 24:29 to make it 4-1.

On the Big Ten logo in Purdue's defensive side of the field, Adam sent a long ball past midfield, where Singarella and a Dayton defender were in a chase for the ball. Singarella won the race to the ball just outside the top of the penalty box as the UD defender attempted to slide and poke the ball away. After dribbling into the box, Singarella found the Flyer keeper well off her line and near the penalty spot. Just a yard or two in front of the keeper, Singarella beat her with a shot to her left.

Adam got the assist, her first in 2024 and third of her career.

Already with a brace, Singarella tried for the hat trick in the 28th minute, but her shot went left of the post. Senior midfielder Cloey Uddenberg had an opportunity saved in the 35th minute, and Omholt sent a shot high in the final seconds of the half.

Purdue out-shot Dayton 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes, with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 3-1 in the Boilermakers' favor.

Just like the start of the game, the second half began with a goal for the Old Gold and Black when Singarella notched her hat trick at 47:33 to extend the lead to 5-1. With space ahead of her, Allan fed a forward pass to Singarella into the 18 on the left side. Just inside the left side of the box near the end line, Singarella scored at a tight angle towards the near post, going under the goalkeeper's legs to find the back of the net.

The assist for Allen is her first in 2024, her second at Purdue and the third of her career.

Dayton then had several chances, including one shot that was saved and another two that went wide. However, the Boilermakers prevented the visitors from finding another goal, and scored another one of their own several minutes later to make it a 6-1 game

At 64:16, it was Omholt who scored from a great centering pass from Budish. After brushing off a defender, Budish moved forward, still outside the penalty area but eight yards from the end line on the far side, and crossed the ball in to Omholt. At the near post, she got the ball six yards out and paused before sending a right-footed shot past the keeper on her right side.

Budish earned her second assist of the campaign and the sixth of her career.

Purdue had three of the final four shots, but one was blocked, one went wide and another hit the post.

The home side had a 5-4 edge in shots and a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal in the second half. The Flyers earned all four corner kicks in the final 45 minutes of play.

On a hot and sun-filled afternoon, Purdue's 10 seniors were recognized on the field before the game as part of Senior Day festivities. The Boilermaker seniors are Zoie Allen, Sydney Boudreau, Gracie Dunaway, Lexi Fraley, Megan Hutchinson, Mackenzie Jones, Lauren Meeks, Abigail Roy, Cloey Uddenberg and Claire Wyville. It also was Alumnae Reunion Weekend, and former Boilermaker soccer players were honored at midfield during halftime.

The non-conference portion of Purdue's schedule concludes with a matchup against Alabama on Thursday, September 5. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET at Folk Field, and admission is free. It is Student Appreciation Night and National Cheese Pizza Day.
