WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A trio of All-Americans in platform diving for the second time in four years and Maggie Love taking down a program record in the 200 IM that had stood since 2012 highlighted Purdue Women's Swimming & Diving's 2023-24 campaign.
In May, longtime diving coach Adam Soldati announced he was passing the torch as the leader of the Boilermakers to protégé and Olympic champion David Boudia. Soldati was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in February and informed the divers of the situation in early April. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June served as his final meet as the lead coach of the Purdue Divers, remaining on staff as the program's director of diving. Soldati came to Purdue in the spring of 2005 and coached Boudia to Olympic gold in 2012. Women's divers Daryn Wright (USA), Jaye Patrick (Latvia) and Maycey Vieta (Puerto Rico) all earned the right to compete at the Olympic Games in Paris and World Aquatics Championships in Japan.
Sophie McAfee, Vieta and Wright gave the Boilermakers three of the eight championship finalists on the tower at the NCAA Championships. Under Soldati, Purdue also accomplished that feat at the women's national championship meet in 2021 and on the men's side in 2011 and 2015.
Season Recaps: 2010 / 2011 / 2012 / 2013 / 2014 / 2015 / 2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2020 / 2021 / 2022 / 2023
McAfee was also a championship finalist on 3-meter, joining LSU's Monsterrat Lavenant as the only divers at NCAAs this year to finish top eight on both a springboard and the platform. McAfee became just Purdue's fourth female diver to be a full-fledged (top 8) All-American on a springboard and the platform in the same year. McAfee was third on 10-meter at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to narrowly miss out on an Olympic bid.
Wright won bronze on 10-meter at the Big Ten Championships and USA Diving Winter Nationals before earning the right to represent Team USA in Paris via a runner-up finish at the Olympic Trials.
Vieta closed out her career as a four-year All-American on the tower. She earned her bid to Paris when she advanced to the semifinal at the World Aquatics Championships in February.
The divers accounted for 57 team points to help the Boilermakers finish 18th at the NCAA Championships. It was Purdue's best showing since 2010 (16th). The women were top 25 at NCAAs for the 14th time since 2005. Only Texas (77) scored more points than the Boilermakers in the diving events this year.
Love eclipsed Emily Fogle's team record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.68 at the Big Ten Triple Quad the first weekend of February. It was the longest-standing benchmark in the Purdue record book.
Three weeks later, the Boilermakers hosted the Big Ten Championships for the fourth time at the Burke Aquatic Center. Wright was a championship finalist in all three diving events and McAfee improved to 9-for-9 in career top-10 finishes at Big Tens. Kate Mouser joined them in scoring all three of her individual events (200 breast, 400 IM, 500 free), joining Alex Clarke as Purdue's only freshmen to score in all three of their individual events at Big Tens since the current top-24 scoring format went into effect in 2016.
Mouser went on to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 400-meter IM, joining Masy Folcik (100m breast) at the quadrennial showcase that was held to much fanfare at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Downtown Indianapolis.
Kendra Bowen, Abby Marcukaitis and Ana Rojas also moved into the top five in program history with their lifetime bests. Bowen posted the program's best 100 free time since November 2013 and Marcukaitis won the C final of the 200 back with the Boilermakers' best time in the event since Jackie Smailis set the current record at the 2019 Big Ten Championships.
