WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Head coach Geoff Young notched his first Big Ten win in a 6-1 victory over Penn State on Sunday.
The Boilermakers immediately held the advantage due to a default win at singles No. 6. With a 1-0 lead, Purdue took the doubles point in 45 minutes.
Soham Purohit/Juan David Velasquez and Stefan Simeunovic/Henrik Villanger came up with 6-3 decisions. The doubles point was Purdue's fifth of the season and first since March 12 against UNLV.
Three Boilermakers earned their first career Big Ten victories in singles action.
The dual was clinched at singles No. 4 and 5. Velasquez dominated at No. 4 winning in straight sets. The freshman picked up his first career Big Ten win 6-2, 6-2 and elevates his record at the position to 5-4.
Purohit and Villanger both won in straight sets. Each player was pushed to a tiebreaker in the first set where they came out with a set advantage. They let up a combined three games in their second sets and brought the score to 6-0.
