WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball begins the first of its two notable homestands with a midweek rematch as Indiana State returns the trip for the back end of the in-season home and home.
First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. on another 70-degree evening at Alexander Field. The forecast is promising all week as the Boilermakers begin their six-game homestand and a stretch in which they will play 15 of their next 18 games at home. General admission tickets, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos and beers are all specially priced at $3 for midweek games at Alexander.
The Sycamores are the first of eight opponents to visit West Lafayette during Purdue's home-heavy stretch. Penn State, Ball State, Butler, Valparaiso, Miami (Ohio), Rutgers and South Dakota State are also scheduled to take the field at Alexander through May 8.
Indiana State won the first meeting 8-2 and has compiled a 10-1 record since March 25. With eight of those 10 victories coming in league play, ISU is tied with Southern Illinois atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings after the first three weekends.
The Boilermakers have won four of seven since returning from Terre Haute, taking two of three in weekend series vs. Northwestern and at Minnesota.
Lukas Cook made his first start as a Boilermaker in the first meeting with Indiana State, starting the game at second base and later moving to third base to begin the bottom of the fourth inning. Two weeks later, he's made five starts as a Boilermaker and they've been at five different positions – including all four infield spots. He was the designated hitter April 2 vs. Northwestern, first baseman April 4 vs. Evansville, third baseman April 8 at Minnesota and shortstop April 9 at Minnesota.
Last season, Cam Thompson was the only Boilermaker to make multiple starts at two different field positions (excluding DH) – 37 at first base and 13 in right field. As an All-Big Ten utility selection in 2019, Cole McKenzie was the last Boilermaker to make starts at four different field positions – all three outfield spots plus first base. Three players – Ryan Howe, Tyler Powers and Owen Jansen – also started games at three infield positions that season. Howe went on to start games at all four infield positions over the course of his career (2019-22).
Cook's remarkable versatility was demonstrated in just two weeks and a span of eight total games for Purdue. Before settling in as an All-Big Ten catcher as a junior in 2018, Nick Dalesandro was among the program's most versatile players in the field across his underclassman years. He started games at pitcher, catcher and all three outfield positions in 2016. The following year, it was catcher and all three outfield spots. Teammate Cody Strong made starts at four positions in 2016 (2B, 3B, LF, RF). Including DH, Jack Pichiotti made starts at five positions (C, 3B, LF, RF, DH) in 2015.

LONG BALLS ADDING UP FOR JARVIS
• Jake Jarvis went deep twice Saturday at Minnesota, posting his second multi-homer game of the season and connecting for his second grand slam. He also hit a long home run March 28 in Terre Haute. With eight home runs for the season, the lefthanded-hitting slugger now shares the team lead with Paul Toetz. Jarvis has hit six homers in his last 12 starts since March 10. His eight homers overall are the most by a Purdue lefty since Kyle Wood connected for 12 as an All-Big Ten honoree in 2016.
• The Boilermakers have two players with at least eight home runs for the second year in a row. Cam Thompson (13) and Troy Viola (8) did it last year. The two players with eight-plus homers is a feat Purdue has now accomplished in consecutive years for the first time since 1998 and 1999. Two Boilermakers with 10-plus homers is also a rare feat, previously achieved only three times since 1990 – 1993 (Mike Biltimier, Alfredo Suarez), 2003 (Daniel Underwood, Nick McIntyre) and 2008 (Dan Black, Ryne White).
