WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue softball squad is set to open the season in Tallahassee, Florida at the JoAnne Graf Classic, hosted by Florida State on Friday.

The team, led by head coach Boo De Oliveira in her seventh season, will take on Longwood, Lipscomb and host No. 5-ranked Florida State over a total of five games to open the 2023 campaign.

SCHEDULE NOTES
• Purdue will spend the first 30 games and eight straight weekends on the road to open the season.
• The Boilermakers are slated to play a total of 12 games this season against opponents ranked or receiving votes on the USA Today/NFCA preseason poll. Of the 12 games, nine will be true road games, while one will be a neutral site.
• During non-conference play, Purdue will play in four states: Florida, North Carolina, California and Ole Miss.
• Purdue will attend the tournaments of Florida State, UCF, Cal State Fullerton and Ole Miss, each of which played in the NCAA College World Series Regionals.
• Overall, Purdue will play two NCAA Super Regional teams in UCF and Ole Miss.

THE BOILERMAKER ROSTER AT A GLANCE
• Class Breakdown: 28 total student-athletes made up of 11 freshmen, seven sophomores, three juniors, five seniors and two fifth-years.
• Purdue's roster includes 16 total newcomers, made up of 11 freshmen and five transfers.
• Freshmen Include: Sage Scarmardo, Summer Scarmardo, Khloe Banks, Alivia Meeks, Rita Nuss, Julianna Verni, Emma Bailey, Jordyn Ramos, Bella Bacon, Caitlyn Boteler and Olivia Cainey.
• Transfers include: sophomore Madi Elish (previous: Arizona), junior Hailey Hayes (previous: Boise State), senior Becca Edwards (previous: Green Bay), redshirt senior Kate Claypool (previous: Iowa), and fifth-year Anna Lonchar (previous: UMBC).
• There are two fifth-year players on the team: Alex Echazarreta and Anna Lonchar.
• Purdue has siblings on the team in identical twins Sage and Summer Scarmardo.

A LOOK AT LIPSCOMB
• Lipscomb is coming off a 20-32 overall record in 2022.
• Top returners include Amy Vetula, who was a 2022 ASUN Second Team honoree.
• Vetula led the team's highest batting average last season (.372)
• #2 Maci Cunconan earn the highest team slugging percentage (.571)
• Seeing the most time in the circle last season and posting a team-leading 11 victories, Kate Peters ended the season a 3.79 ERA
• #2 Maci Cunconan landed a spot on the 2022 All-Academic Team

A LOOK AT LONGWOOD
• Longwood earned a share of the Big South regular season title last season and made it to the conference championship game before ending 2022 with a 34-24 overall record.
• The team returns 11 players from a 2022 roster that posted the team's best batting average since 2013 (.282).
• A key returner is #6 Jaden Pone, who obtained the team's highest batting average last season (.416).
• Leading the pitching staff last season with a 2.81 ERA and returning for her sophomore campaign is #13 Er'ron Burton.
• #6 Jaden Pone earned the Big South Freshmen of the Year title, Big South First Team, Freshmen Team, and VaSID All-State recognition.

A LOOK AT NO. 5 FLORIDA STATE
• Behind a 54-7 overall record and a Regional Final appearance in 2022, Florida State was picked by ACC coaches to win the league for the 10th consecutive season.
• The Noles had a conference-high five student-athletes selected to the preseason All-ACC Team: Devyn Flaherty (infield), Mack Leonard (infield), Kathryn Sandercock (pitcher), Kaley Mudge (outfield) and Kalei Harding (utility). Mudge, Leonard and Sandercock were first team honorees a season ago, while Harding was a second team honoree.
• Leonard returns as the team's leader at the plate with a .377 batting average.
• Leading the Noles in the circle is Sandercock, who finished the 2022 season with 30 wins and only three losses with a 1.44 ERA.
• Returning to the squad this season are all-ACC first team selections Kaley Mudge, Mack Leonard, and Sandercock.

A LOOK-BACK AT THE 2022 SEASON
• Purdue went 24-31 (7-15 Big Ten) last season.
• The team posted 12 triples last season, third-most in the Big Ten.
• Purdue graduated seven seniors, including Rachel Becker, who not only led the Big Ten in batting average (.429), but became the second All-American in program history after earning third team at-large honors at the shortstop position and CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team recognition.
• As a team, the Boilermakers posted a .254 batting average.
• Over its last six games of the regular season, Purdue went 4-1.
• Defensively, the team produced a .971 fielding %, the second-highest mark in program history, only behind 2021's record-setting .972 %.
• The Boilermakers picked up their first win over a ranked opponent since 2016 and their third since 2009. with the 1-0 shutout at #22 USF last Thursday, March 17. The win also marked the first top-25 victory for head coach Boo De Oliveira.
• The Boilermakers also registered record book-worthy stats with 34 home runs, good for fourth-most in program history and most since 2011. Meanwhile, the team tied the program-record with 18 sac flies.

THE RETURNERS
• The Boilermakers return a large chunk of their starting lineup, including pitcher Alex Echazarreta, second baseman Jade Moy, third baseman Olivia McFadden, outfielder Kyndall Bailey, catcher Ryen Ross and outfielder Kiersen George.
• Of the returners, Moy and McFadden are the only two to play and start in every single game. Meanwhile, Dillon follows closely with 54 total starts and appearances and Bailey appearing in 50 with 33 starts.

THE FRESHMAN CLASS
• The 11-member freshman class is one of the strongest in the nation, having been ranked the No. 5 Recruit Class by Extra Innings Softball on signing day.
• Among the standout class is Las Vegas native Jordyn Ramos, who not only was named by MaxPreps as the Best Player in the State of Nevada in 2022, but was also selected by the NCAA as a top-55 freshman to watch this season.

ALEX ECHAZARRETA: RETURNING FOR YEAR FIVE
• Alex Echazarreta announced her return following the end of 2022 campaign.
• The fifth-year played her best softball as a senior, earning second team all-region honors.
• As the team's No. 1 pitcher, Echazarreta posted 10 wins in the circle behind a 10-8 record and a 3.60 ERA.
• She led the Boilermakers to a complete-game shutout at No. 22 USF last season, allowing just two hits in the program's first top-25 victory since 2009.
• Offensively, Echazarreta led the team a season ago with seven home runs and a .578 slugging %.
• The Reston, Virginia product totaled 20 runs, 43 hits and a team-leading 31 RBI behind a .336 batting avgerage.

JADE MOY: READY FOR MORE
• In Jade Moy's first full season with the Boilermakers (opted out of the 2021 season due to COVID-19), the Boilermaker added her name to the Purdue season annals with her four sac flies, becoming just the seventh Boilermaker in program history to post as many in a single season.
• Moy saw the most at-bats on the team in 2022, culminating in a .242 batting average, 23 runs, 40 hits and 19 RBI.
