Vega Set to Coach USA U20 Pan American Team

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue assistant coach Leroy Vega has been named an assistant coach for Team USA and heads to Oaxtepec, Mexico this weekend for the 2022 U20 Pan American Championships. Vega is set to coach the nation's freestyle roster, which includes two past World medal winners and six other past World Team members.

"This is an awesome opportunity for me to go support our country and help mentor some of the nation's best wrestlers," said Vega. "I'm very excited to help these young men go chase gold in Mexico and continue helping them prep for the world championships."

This coaching assignment adds to a long list of accolades and opportunities for Vega. He was a two-time placewinner at the world championships, placing in both Greco Roman and freestyle, and was a three-time All-American at Minnesota. He stayed on to coach with the Golden Gophers after helping lead them to a pair of national team titles, and also had coaching stops at Calumet College of St. Joseph and his alma mater, Portage High School.

In his three years with the Boilermaker lightweights he's mentored several standout Boilermakers, including 2020 All-American Devin Schroder and 2022 U.S. Open Champion Matt Ramos.
