WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With the potential tying run already rounding third base, Tanner Haston made a sprawling catch in deep right-center field to secure the final out of the day and lift the Gold Team to a 3-2 victory in the opener of Purdue baseball's Black & Gold Series at Alexander Field.

Wyatt Wendell closed out the victory with 2 2/3 innings of two-hit relief, but he needed the running catch from Haston to prevent Evan Albrecht from delivering a game-tying hit in the final frame. Will Allen had doubled as a pinch hitter moments earlier.

Tyler Powers' double ignited a two-run rally in the in second inning and led to the game-deciding run for the Gold Team. Powers and Cam Hill scored on consecutive RBI singles from Robert Mannino and Curtis Washington Jr.

Ryan Howe joined Powers and Mannino with a pair of hits in the seven-inning affair. For the Black Team, Howe singled and scored in the first inning and delivered an RBI double in his next at-bat. Pablo Lanzarote (Black) and Jake Jarvis (Gold) also drove in runs with first-inning sacrifice flies.

Khal Stephen surrendered two runs (one earned) over three innings as the Gold Team's starting pitcher. The freshman retired six consecutive batters at one point and struck out three. Joseph Whitman backed up Stephen by retiring all four batters he faced. Wendell also retired six straight batters during one stretch, including a 1-2-3 frame vs. the Black Team's 3-4-5 hitters in the top of the sixth.

Freshman Zach Fletcher worked a 1-2-3 third inning vs. the Gold Team's 3-4-5 hitters. Kyle Wade backed him up with two innings of one-hit relief, also working a 1-2-3 frame.

Third basemen CJ Valdez (Gold) and Howe (Black) both made nice plays at third base in the fourth inning. Valdez made a nifty pick on a hot shot off the bat of Jake Parr and Howe handled a quality bunt attempt by Powers flawlessly. Offensively, Valdez's opposite-field double helped set up the first-inning sac fly from Jarvis.

Left fielder Jack Firestone (Black) threw out a runner at third base on a two-out single by Powers to end the sixth inning.

Game 2 of the series is now set for Friday at 5 p.m. ET. Unfortunately, there is no free parking available around Alexander Field due to the sold out Purdue football game Saturday. Family members of Purdue baseball players should contact their sons for parking information for Friday and Saturday. All three games of the Black & Gold Series remain open to the public.
