WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball closes out fall practice with the annual Black & Gold Series, a three-game intrasquad showdown that is again open to the public at Alexander Field.
All three games will be contested regardless of the results of the first two days. Games times are set for Thursday at 3 p.m., Friday at 5 p.m. (updated Thursday morning) and Saturday at 10:50 a.m. The Saturday morning first pitch is in place before Purdue football hosts Wisconsin at 3 p.m. at Ross-Ade Stadium. Admission is free for all three games.
Wednesday Night Update: The Grand Prix area is NOT available for baseball fan parking. If any fans wish to attend the Friday and Saturday baseball games, they will need to purchase parking to park around Alexander Field. All baseball, softball, grand prix, grass, gravel areas are reserved for football parking Saturday. The Alexander, Bittinger Stadium and Grand Prix lots will all be towed beginning at 5 p.m. ET on Friday.
Friday and Saturday parking accommodations for families of Purdue baseball players were shared through the players. Families are encouraged to inquire with their sons for that parking info if they have not already received it. For general fans, parking in any free areas on campus and walking to Alexander Field remains an option. The Greater Lafayette City Bus system's 4B bus route also stops at Purdue's Schwartz Tennis Center just east of Alexander.
Because of the home football game, there is no baseball parking permitted in the Alexander Field lot after 5 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday. Fans are asked to park in the Grand Prix lots to the west of the access road that runs from Cherry Lane to Purdue softball's Bittinger Stadium.
Rosters were drafted Tuesday evening after a team meal at Big O's Sports Room. John Madia and Daniel Furuto served as the general managers of the Black Team while Terry Rooney and Ross Learnard did likewise for the Gold Team. Players were drafted by position group and presented a black or gold jersey after their name was called.
Due to rain during the final week of October last year, Purdue's Black & Gold Series was contested as a 12-inning mini tripleheader, featuring games of five, four and three innings. The Black Team won the day with a 2-0-1 mark thanks to 12 scoreless frames. Current Boilermakers Ricky Castro, Calvin Schapira and Joseph Whitman all worked a pair of shutout innings for the Black Team. Jack Firestone doubled and scored as part of a two-hit day.
• Mike Bolton Jr. opened the scoring with a three-run homer to center field in the third inning.
• Curtis Washington Jr. made a highlight-reel diving catch on a line drive to center field in the fourth inning.
• Jake Jarvis and Jake Parr both connected for long balls to right field. Jarvis connected for a two-run shot over the bullpen in the fourth inning and Parr hit an opposite-field solo shot in the bottom of the sixth.
• Ty Gill connected for a three-run double to center field in the ninth inning.
• Troy Wansing posted a pair of 1-2-3 frames and struck out three in his two innings as the starting pitcher.
• Landon Weins followed up Wansing with two more hitless frames, allowing just one base runner.
• Wyatt Wendell and Griffin Lohman both struck out five over two hitless innings of relief.
• Khal Stephen closed out the victory by going six-up, six-down through his two innings, striking out four.
