COLLEGE PARK, Md. –
No. 17-ranked Maryland bolted to a 36-20 halftime lead, then held off a second-half rally to defeat Purdue 57-50 at the XFinity Center on Saturday.
 
The loss drops Purdue's record to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten Conference, while Maryland improves to 14-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
 
Maryland led from the outset, jumping out to a 14-2 lead just six minutes into the game. The lead would swell to 28-10 with eight minutes left before the Terrapins settled in for a 36-20 halftime advantage. Maryland, which entered the game shooting just 30.0 percent from 3-point range in league play, made seven of its first nine 3-point attempts to stretch the lead to 16 at the break.
 
Purdue started to chip away at the lead, cutting the margin to 42-33 on an Eric Hunter Jr., 3-pointer with 14:20 to play. Maryland still led 52-42 when Trevion Williams scored and Isaiah Thompson made a 3-pointer to trim the margin to 52-47. Purdue would cut it to 53-50 on three Sasha Stefanovic free throws with 3:52 to play, but Maryland clamped down and scored the game's last four points for the 57-50 decision.
 
Nojel Eastern led Purdue with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Hunter Jr., added 10 points and four rebounds.
 
Purdue will return home to face Illinois on Tuesday at Mackey Arena.
