Madia, Sarhage Take On New Roles for Baseball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball staff members John Madia and Tim Sarhage will have new duties and titles beginning this month, head coach Greg Goff has announced.

Madia is moving from director of operations to a newly created director of player development role. Sarhage is joining the staff in a full-time capacity as the program's supervisor of operations. A three-year team manager, Sarhage is set to graduate this month with a bachelor's degree in political science.

Madia is a 1978 Purdue graduate and former first baseman for the Boilermakers. He joined the staff as the program's first operations specialist during the 2015-16 school year and has now collaborated with three different head coaches. In addition to establishing the operations role, he has made important strides in the program's alumni relations and outreach efforts. Madia enjoyed a distinguished career as a global business executive with Dow Chemical and CH2M. He has a rich baseball history in coaching and leadership roles with the Indiana Bulls and served as an associate scout with the Baltimore Orioles organization.

Sarhage joined the program in the fall of 2016 and has missed only a couple weekend road trips over the last three seasons. He has served as the leader of the manager staff since the spring of 2017, specializing in operations. He's graduating a semester early in 3 ½ years.

In his new role, Madia will continue to provide guidance to the coaching staff and mentorship for the student-athletes. Skill refinement and identifying areas for growth will be the focus of his statistical and video analysis. He will continue to lead the alumni relations and outreach while also assisting with on-campus recruiting and coordinating community service activities. Madia will maintain his regular presence at practice, games and on road trips to provide the staff a comprehensive perspective from the dugout. He'll also work to cultivate relationships with high school and summer league coaches/organizations.

Sarhage will take on the tasks of organizing all aspects of team travel and budget responsibilities, including coordinating team meals. He'll take the lead on bat testing, setting up practice times on road trips and visiting-team accommodations at Alexander Field in accordance with NCAA/Big Ten rules. Sarhage is also tasked with serving as the point of contact between the coaching staff and athletics department personnel specializing in facilities, marketing, turf, equipment and event management. As baseball's jack of all trades, he'll also assist in the coordination of community events as well as with youth and team camps at Alexander Field.

Official team practice for the 2020 baseball season begins Friday, Jan. 24. Opening day of the new season is set for Friday, Feb. 14.
