WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
– Purdue's Kaersten Meitz and Jinq En Phee are slated to race for their countries in three events apiece as the FINA Swimming World Cup tour resumes with a three-day meet in Budapest this weekend.

Phee begins her senior season at Purdue later this month. First she'll represent Malaysia in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke. All events are long course meters.

Meitz (2015-18) has continued to train under Purdue head coach John Klinge at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center since graduating in May 2018. She's slated to represent the United States in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle this weekend.

Both Boilermakers have a race on all three days of the Oct. 4 to 6 meet at Danube Arena, which is touted as the most modern indoor aquatic center in Europe. The facility also hosted the 2017 FINA World Championships. Purdue divers Brandon Loschiavo, Steele Johnson, David Colturi and Steven LoBue all competed for the USA in Budapest two years ago.

Purdue men's head coach Dan Ross said he was working to help connect Meitz and Phee with alumna Gyöngyvér Lakos, a Budapest native that continues to live in the area. Lakos (1998-01) represented Hungary at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. Like Phee, Lakos enrolled at Purdue after competing at the Olympics. As a senior in 2001, Lakos anchored the Boilermakers' 400 medley relay team to honorable mention All-America accolades. She also competed individually in the 100 and 200 free at the 2001 NCAA Championships.

The 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup features seven tour events. Budapest in the fourth stop of the series. It began in August with three-straight weekend competitions in Asia – Japan, China and Singapore. A meet in Germany is slated for next weekend followed by events in Russia and Qatar in November.

Meitz and Phee both competed at prominent international meets this summer. Meitz won gold medals in the 400-meter free and 4x200 free relay at the World University Games in Italy. Phee raced in a pair of breaststroke evets as one of a program-record eight Boilermakers to compete at the FINA World Championships in South Korea. It was the second career appearance at the World Championships for the 2016 Olympian.

Meitz had an opportunity to lead the singing of "Shout!" at Ross-Ade Stadium between the third and fourth quarters of the Saturday, Sept. 28 football game vs. Minnesota. The exclusive list of swimming & diving alumni to receive that honor this decade also includes NCAA champion divers David Boudia, Casey Matthews and Johnson.

Purdue's season-opening weekend (Oct. 18-19) features an intrasquad meet Friday at 5 p.m. ET and the annual Indiana Intercollegiates on Saturday at noon.
