WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue swimming & diving's season-opening weekend features a Friday night filled with team-wide bragging rights at the Black & Gold intrasquad along with a full deck Saturday at the largest meet of the year, the annual Indiana Intercollegiates.
Friday's intrasquad gets underway at 5 p.m. ET and will feature 11 races, with the divers opting not to compete. Saturday's Indiana Intercollegiates meet features its customary noon start time. It will again be comprised of 12 events. Admission is free for all meets at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The Indiana Intercollegiates meet once again shares a date with the Purdue Half Marathon and 5K race. Fans are advised to be aware of road closures around campus. Parking is recommended in the McCutcheon Garage at the corner of Third and McCutcheon Streets. More info is available here: Purduehalf.com/course.html.
This year's field for the Indiana Intercollegiates is believed to be the largest of the decade. Twenty-one teams representing a combined 12 Indiana-based universities are slated to have student-athletes in attendance. Nine of the schools will have co-ed representation. To help accommodate that larger field, the individual medley race was shortened from 200 yards to 100. And each team is limited to a maximum three entries in the 500 freestyle, which is the only event of the day longer than 100 yards.
Bethel University, an NAIA member institution based in Mishawka, announced it was adding men's and women's swimming & diving programs in August 2018. The Pilots are coached by Purdue swimming alumna Deb Thompson (1979-83), who was part of multiple record-setting relays and also swam at nationals with those relays as a Boilermaker. Two years ago, it was the Indiana Wesleyan women that debuted as a program by competing at the Indiana Intercollegiates.
Meanwhile, former Purdue men's assistant coach J. Agnew brings his Ball State teams to the Indiana Intercollegiates for the second year in a row. Agnew was named the head coach at his alma mater in August 2018 after 11 years at Purdue.
Active Boilermakers to win individual events at the 2018 Indiana Intercollegiates included: Maggie Merriman (1-meter), Emily Bretscher (3-meter), Jade Knueppel (50 free), Maizie Seidl (200 free), Tessa Wrightson (100 back), Megan Johnson (200 IM), Ben Bramley (3-meter), Nikola Acin (50 free), Kristian Komlenic (100 free) and Nick McDowell (500 free).
Alumna Kaersten Meitz is slated to compete for the Gold Team in the intrasquad Friday. The USA Swimming National Team member continues to train under head coach John Klinge at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. She has won three international medals this year.
Meitz has also taken over as the host of Purdue Swimming & Diving's Behind the Blocks interview video series. Her first guests of the new season were upperclassmen Will Schrensky and Riley Kishman. They highlighted freshmen Keelan Hart and Sylvia Kobylak as Boilermakers they were most excited to see make their collegiate debuts this weekend.
