Purdue Athletics Honor Roll

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Women's golfer Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri and men's basketball player Grady Eifert were named Purdue's recipients of the 2019 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, the conference office announced Wednesday. Twenty-eight student-athletes from around the conference were selected for the honor from a group that exceeded 350 candidates.

The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The individuals must be fair and respectful to their opponent and, in addition, be enthusiastic about the game, enjoy playing it and, win or lose, do their absolute best at all times. The recipients also shall be active on their campus communities. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Putri continued Purdue's outstanding tradition in women's golf, becoming the ninth Big Ten Champion in program history and putting up some of the top Boilermaker scores all-time. She set a personal record on the final day of the conference championships, shooting five-under 67 at TPC River's Bend to secure medalist honors, picking the perfect time to win the first tournament of her collegiate career. She earned Big Ten All-Tournament honors and was named Second Team All-Big Ten, the first all-conference award of her career.

She tied Purdue's season record for rounds in the 60's, carding seven in 2018-19, and had the Boilermakers' lowest score in 12-of-36 rounds on the year. She tied for the team lead with 17 scores of par or better, good for 47.2 percent of her rounds on the season, had five top-10 tournament performances and a Purdue-best 115 birdies. Putri's 73.14 stroke average was the second best for a Boilermaker over the last six years, trailing only 2017 All-American August Kim (72.55).

Eifert played a key role in Purdue's drive to its 24th Big Ten Championship and berth in the Elite Eight, starting all 36 games for the Boilermakers. The former walkon who earned a scholarship as a sophomore was the nation's most-efficient player averaging 5.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 52.8 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from long distance. He boasted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.11 (59 / 19), averaging a turnover every 48.5 minutes played.

Moreso, Eifert epitomized the Boilermaker spirit, becoming one of the most successful former walkons in Big Ten history. He was consistently praised by coaches, announcers, fans, opposing coaches and players for his work ethic and the way he approached the game.

Putri becomes the first women's golfer since Onnarin Sattayabanphot in 2006 to earn the award, while Eifert becomes the second straight men's basketball player after P.J. Thompson was named the recipient in 2018. He is the third men's basketball player overall, joining Thompson and Kenneth Lowe (2003).
