WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue volleyball's assistant coach Kathy Jewell and setter Hayley Bush have been selected to the Big Ten Volleyball Foreign Tour team and will travel to Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan from June 14-26, 2019.
In addition to competition on the court, the student-athletes and the coaching staff will have the opportunity to explore Japanese landmarks, study foreign languages and culture with local students, and visit some of Japan's most historic sites, including Mt. Fuji, the Gion district, the Fushimi Inari Shrine, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the Philosopher's Walk.
Jewell joins a three-member Big Ten coaching staff, with Michigan's Mark Rosen serving as the head coach. Penn State's Virginia Pham will assist as the director of operations and Kelly Moriarty of Michigan State will be the team's athletic trainer. Big Ten representatives, Grace Bonoma, Assistant Director of Sport Administration, and Shannon Malone, Assistant Director of Communications, will also travel with the team.
A returning starter for the Boilermakers, Bush is one of 12 student-athletes selected to the foreign tour. Last year, the Union, Kentucky native guided Purdue with a team-best 1,416 assists, ranking her ninth in the NCAA. Recording five of Purdue's ten double-doubles on the season, she averaged 10.89 assists, 1.78 digs and 0.55 kills pet set.
"I'm really excited to play with some of the most talented student-athletes from the Big Ten," Bush said. "It's very exciting to play different teams and experience different levels of play as well as being given the amazing opportunity to learn more about the Japanese culture and visit all of the beautiful places."
