WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Cory Brooks worked four no-hit innings in his second appearance coming back from injury and Milo Beam had four productive plate appearances while batting leadoff for the first time, leading Purdue baseball to a 10-1 victory vs. Chicago State on Tuesday in the opener of a nine-game homestand at Alexander Field.
Brooks struck out five of the 13 batters he faced, leading the way as the Boilermakers (14-25) recorded 11 Ks, their 17th double-figure strikeout total of the season. Only an error to open the second inning kept Brooks from retiring all 12 batters he faced. He threw 55 pitches in his second outing of the season and his now worked six innings of one-hit ball since returning from Tommy John surgery.
Purdue racked up a program-record 10 stolen bases. Cole McKenzie and Tyler Powers both swiped three bags. McKenzie has reached base safely multiple times in all seven games of his current hit streak.
Beam was one of four Boilermakers with multiple hits, finishing the win 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. He executed a suicide squeeze bunt, delivered an RBI single and doubled in his final at-bat. Over the last two games, the junior has reached base safely six times via four hits and two walks.
Purdue scored three times in the first and sixth innings, and in six of its eight innings at the plate overall.
Dalton Parker struck out the final two batters of the game while working a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his season debut at Alexander Field. Austin Peterson snagged a line drive near his head as part of a 1-2-3 frame in the top of the seventh.
Zac Fascia delivered a sacrifice fly and opposite-field RBI single in his first two trips to the dish. Bryce Bonner singled in a run while reaching base safely three times. McKenzie came to the plate five times, driving in a run or reaching base safely in all but one.
Chicago State (10-27) broke up the shutout with a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning. It was the only frame in which CSU had a runner advance past first base.
