BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
– Purdue women's swimming & diving opened the Big Ten Championships with a program-record time in the 200 medley relay for the third consecutive year.

Jackie Smailis, Jinq En Phee, Taite Kitchel and Danielle Auckley teamed up for a time of 1:37.17, besting their mark from Big Tens last season by .66 hundredths of a second. The quartet finished seventh this year while posting an NCAA provisional qualifying time (B Cut). It marked the third year in a row that Smailis and Auckley were part of the record-setting 200 medley relay team on the opening night of Big Tens.

The Boilermakers have established a program record in a relay at Big Tens in four of the last five years dating back to 2015. Smailis, Phee, Kitchel and Auckley became Purdue's first relay team during head coach John Klinge's tenure (2009-present) to establish a record in consecutive years with the same four swimmers.

Purdue's 800 freestyle relay team of Maizie Seidl, Megan Johnson, Gretta DeCoursey and Natalie Myers placed sixth with a time of 7:08.47, good for seventh fastest in program history. Seidl's leadoff split of 1:46.85 was a career best in the 200, moving the sophomore up one spot into eighth place in program history.

Gretta DeCoursey impressed with a team-best 200 split of 1:45.81 on the third leg. However, only leadoff legs on relays qualify for the all-time lists of the individual events. Seidl improved her 200 split by .58 hundredths of a second from the 2018 Big Ten Championships even though she moved from the third leg to the leadoff.

On the 200 medley relay, Smailis (24.89), Kitchel (23.07) and Auckley (22.03) all improved on their 50 splits from last season while Phee (27.18) matched her mark. Kitchel dropped .43 hundredths of a second off her split to post the significant time drop. If she can do likewise in the 100 butterfly Friday, she should be able to eclipse Kylie Vogel's program record (52.85) from 2017. Kitchel posted a time of 52.91 in the 100 fly at Big Tens a year ago and already owns the Purdue record in the 200 fly.

The Big Ten Championships continue Thursday with prelims at 11 a.m. ET and finals at 6:30 p.m.
