WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The final full week of October coincides with the end of Purdue baseball's fall ball slate, punctuated by the three-game Old Gold & Black Series that is open to the public at Alexander Field.
Weather permitting, all three games will be played regardless of the outcome of the first two. Games are set for Tuesday, Friday and Saturday this week. Updated start times now feature first pitches at 4 p.m. Tuesday, 3:20 p.m. Friday and 11:20 a.m. Saturday.
Admission is free for the Old Gold & Black Series. Fans unable to attend the afternoon matinees are invited to follow along with the free live audio and live stats available here at PurdueSports.com.
Team rosters for the Old Gold & Black Series were scheduled to be determined Monday evening.
Purdue outscored the opposition 44-1 in its three fall ball exhibition games, albeit against non-NCAA Division I competition. Transfers Cole McKenzie, Zac Fascia and Johnny Sage started all three games. Freshmen Evan Albrecht and Ryan Howe also earned starts in the infield. Otherwise, the Boilermakers' lineups for the October exhibition games featured a number of familiar faces, headlined by returning starters Skyler Hunter and Ben Nisle in the outfield. Milo Beam, Bryce Bonner, Nick Evarts, Owen Jansen, Charlie Nasuti and Tyler Powers also remain in the mix after earning opportunities to contribute at various times last season.
On the mound, 23 of the 29 innings in the exhibition games were pitched by returning letterwinners from the 2018 squad. Andrew Bohm, Ryan Beard and Dalton Parker were all scheduled to pitch four innings in the scrimmage this past Saturday and would likely not take the mound again until the weekend.
Last year's Old Gold & Black Series ended in a 1-1 stalemate after the series finale was rained out. Jansen was 3-for-6 with a pair of extra-base hits and four RBI for the Gold Team. Bo Hofstra worked three innings of one-hit ball as the game 2 start for the Black Team.
Julia Bittner from Kappa Kappa Gamma and Thayne Bukowski from Phi Gamma Delta were the winners of the inaugural Greek Home Run Derby on Oct. 19 at Alexander Field. Purdue players led tours of the stadium suites and clubhouse facilities to the students in attendance as well.
While fall ball comes to a close this week, the 2019 season is not far off on the horizon. Official preseason practice begins Friday, Jan. 25 and opening day is Friday, Feb. 15. Both dates are universal starts across the country for the DI level. The Boilermakers travel to Southern Miss for their season-opening series.
