WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The highly-ranked Purdue men's basketball team hosts Southern Indiana on Tuesday, Nov. 1, for its lone exhibition contest of the season.

It marks the second time under head coach Matt Painter that the Boilermakers will face Southern Indiana in an exhibition contest, defeating the Screaming Eagles 65-49 to begin the 2011-12 season.

It also gives Painter a chance to go against a former assistant as USI's head coach Rodney Watson leads the Screaming Eagles into Mackey Arena. Watson was an assistant under Painter in 2003-04 at Southern Illinois, where the Salukis posted a 25-5 overall record and a 17-1 record in the Missouri Valley Conference. Purdue associate head coach Jack Owens was also on the staff that year in Carbondale.

Watson is one of several branches that extends from the Painter coaching tree, which includes head coaches Paul Lusk (Missouri State), Cuonzo Martin (Caifornia) and Rick Ray (Southeast Missouri State).

Southern Indiana will provide a stiff challenge on Tuesday night. The Screaming Eagles posted a 19-11 record a year ago and return three players that averaged over 13.2 points per game last year. USI has recorded a winning record for 24 straight years and since the 1992-93 season, have posted a .781 winning percentage (589-165).

Purdue will put a 26-game winning streak in exhibition games on the line Tuesday night. Under Painter, the Boilermakers are 21-0 in exhibition games, having won by an average of 26.2 points per game. All-time, Purdue is 61-7 in exhibition games.

It will be Purdue's lone exhibition game of the season and the season opener will come Nov. 11, when McNeese State visits Mackey Arena.

The Boilermakers return three starters and eight letterwinners from last year's team that posted a 26-9 record and was ranked in the nation's top 25 all year long. This year's team is ranked in the top 20 of nearly all preseason polls.
