Jan. 25, 2015

CLEMSON, S.C. - The 40th-ranked Purdue women's tennis team was denied a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, suffering a 5-0 loss to No. 14 Clemson Sunday at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend finale. While improving to 2-0, the Tigers advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia Feb. 6-9 at Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The loss evens the Boilermakers' season record at 1-1.

Clemson captured the doubles point by winning at the first and third positions. The nation's second-ranked doubles team of Jessy Rompies and Beatrice Gumulya first topped Purdue senior and junior duo of Daniela Vidal and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum, 6-1. A 6-3 decision from Tiger tandem Yuilynn Miao and Daniela Ruiz over Lynda Xepoleas and Andjela Djokovic sealed the point for Clemson.

Two previously undefeated Boilermakers suffered their first singles losses of the season. Vidal, ranked 110th and playing at the No. 1 spot, was limited by 85th-ranked Romy Koelzer, 6-2, 6-3. Clemson's Gumulya got the better of Bernard-Feigenbaum, 6-2, 6-4, while playing at No. 2. Both Vidal and Bernard-Feigenbaum now own marks of 4-1.

Rompies and Djokovic battled to a first-set tiebreaker and the Tiger dominated, 7-6 (0). Djokovic, who is ranked 105th nationally, was unable to rebound and suffered a 6-1 loss in the second set as the Tigers' ticket to Charlottesville was secured with the upset.

The final point came at No. 3 from Tristen Dewar, who notched a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Deborah Suarez.

It'll be two weeks before the Boilermakers are back on the courts when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., to take on the Golden Hurricane Feb. 7 at 12:30 p.m. ET at the Case Center.
